Aug 11, 1822The leaders of the Corregimiento of Chiquimula meet and decide to secede from Guatemala and join the Kingdom of Mexico. The government of Guatemala immediately dispatched soldiers to put a stop to it and force the leaders to swear allegiance to Guatemala, which they did.Los líderes del Corregimiento de Chiquimula se encuentran y deciden separarse de Guatemala y unirse al Reino de México. Oct 11, 1825Decree Number 289 of the Constituent Assembly divides Guatemala into seven departments. Article 6 of the decree divides the Department of Chiquimula into seven districts: Zacapa, Acasaguastlán, Esquipulas, Chiquimula, Sansaria, Jalapa and Mita, with each district's capitol being the towns of: Zacapa, San Augustine, Guastatoya, Esquipulas, Chiquimula, Jalapa and Mita.

The Department of Suchitepéquez is created by decree of the Constituent Assembly.
Decreto Número 289 de la Asamblea Constituyente divide a Guatemala en siete departamentos. El artículo 6 del Decreto divide el Departamento de Chiquimula en siete distritos: Zacapa, Acasaguastlán, Esquipulas, Chiquimula, Sansaria, Jalapa y Mita, con cabecera de cada distrito están las ciudades de: Zacapa, San Agustín, Guastatoya, Esquipulas, Chiquimula, Jalapa y Mita.

Nov 4, 1825The Departments of Alta Verapaz, Chiquimula, Escuintla, Sacatepequez, Totonicapán, y Guatemala are created by decree of the Constituent Assembly.

The Constituent Assembly promotes the Corregimiento (precinct) of Chiquimula to a department and divides Chiquimula into seven districts. It also creates the Department of Solola.
Los Departamentos de Alta Verapaz, Chiquimula, Escuintla, Sacatepequez, Totonicapán, y Guatemala son creados por decreto de la Asamblea Constituyente.

La Asamblea Constituyente promueve el Corregimiento de Chiquimula a un Departamento. Y Chiquimula se divide en siete distritos. También crea el Departamento de Sololá.

He also was ahead of his time in advocating preservation of the ruins and prohibition of the common practice of sacking the sites for statues and jewelry, and doing severe damage in the process.
